 Ebb Valley News Update

November 2009 - Notes from the Office
American Education Week – American Education Week will be celebrated November 16 – November 20. We welcome visitors throughout the school year and ask that you check with your child’s teacher before you visit so you can be sure you will be able to see the classes that you want to see. Please remember that Grade 4 has a field trip to River Valley Ranch on November 18, Grade 2 has their in-school Breadmake Program on November 19 and Kindergarten has a field trip to the Maryland Science Center on November 20.

Ag in the Classroom – Mobile Lab – Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Jo Downey, Grade 3 and support from the elementary science supervisor, Cindy Eckenrode, we were able to secure a week long visit by the Mobile Ag in the Classroom Lab. The lab will be at Ebb Valley the week of November 9 – 13. Students in Grade 1 – Grade 5 will be able to participate in walk-throughs and learn about the importance of agriculture through hands on experiences.

Thanksgiving – We want to wish each and every family a very Happy Thanksgiving. We are so fortunate to be able to work in such a great school with so many supportive families. Just a reminder that schools are closed for students and teachers on November 23rd and 24th, offices will remain open.

School Sign Update – We have been working diligently to get the school sign in place. We had an original design that we had selected when we held the fund-raiser last year. Unfortunately that supplier went out of business and we had to find a new sign vendor. The new sign vendor was selected and was able to basically replicate the original design. The sign has been fabricated and delivered to the school. We are now working with volunteer contractors who are going to do the excavation and build the sign base using our bricks that match the school. We really appreciate our volunteer contractors who will allow us to get the sign installed with no additional expense to the PTA.  If the weather cooperates, we hope the sign will be installed soon.

Stoplight News – We have an operating stoplight!! The light was activated on Friday, October 23rd.  We want to remind parents that the light is now operating but that they should be very careful at the intersection until all motorists become familiar with the new signal. The next much anticipated step will be the opening of Hallie Avenue across from the school that will allow re-routing of some of the buses which should speed up their arrival to school.

Parent Drop-Off and Pick up Concern -  Lately we have noticed a gradual increase in the numbers of students who are being dropped off at school in the morning, to the point where we are having quite a traffic jam in the morning. In addition, we are having upwards of 50 students who are being picked up each afternoon. We are asking that you consider putting your child on the school bus. School bus transportation is much safer than being transported by car, it is a greener means of transportation, and it is much cheaper in this time of fast rising gasoline prices.

BoxTops for Education - Thanks to the efforts of Mrs Maureen Aversa our BoxTop collection is going very well.  We just heard that we have earned over $900 in BoxTops for Education. Keep those BoxTops coming.

Electronic Communication Tools - CCPS is now using is the AlertNow Rapid Communication Service.   AlertNow replaces eSchoolnewsletter and is capable of providing e-mail and phone alerts at no charge to parents.  You do not have to sign up for this service. All contact information is taken from the emergency procedure cards. We are excited about the new capabilites that AlertNow offers and believe it will greatly enhance our communication with parents and our school communitites.

 RAZ Kids

We are very pleased to announce that our students read 2160 books on the RAZ Kids site.  That is tremendous. OUr students continue to have access to the RAZ Kids website that will help them maintain and possibly boost their reading scores. Your child can access this wonderful world of books because our school system has subscribed to the online library of exciting reading materials. Raz-Kids helps students improve their reading skills as they listen to a book read for modeled fluency. Then, if the computer has a built-in record function, they can record themselves reading the same book. Or, students can read the book to themselves or aloud for practice.  Interactive quizzes are available at the end of each book.

Here is how to access the website and your child's reading assignment from any computer connected to the Internet:

1. Go to www.raz-kids.com

2. Type in the teacher's username on the flier that came home in your child's report card.  If you need your teacher's username, please contact the school.

3. Find your name or symbol on the chart and click on that symbol.

4. The books in your child's assignment and stars earned appear on a personal assignment page. Your child can choose to listen, read, or take a quiz by clicking on the symbols below each book.

Remember, the more your child reads, the better reader he or she will become!
