Outdoor School Teachers

  
Carly Ferguson is originally from Wells, Maine, but calls Maryland her home. She is a graduate of West Virginia University.This is Ms. Ferguson's second year at Outdoor School. Ms. Ferguson  moved back to Maryland after spending almost 8 years in Morgantown, West Virginia. Over the years, she has gotten the travel bug and lived in Mexico, South Africa, Spain and Fairbanks, Alaska. She has enjoyed trekking through different hemispheres, climbing volcanoes and diving with sharks. Ms. Ferguson has also been leading Outdoor Adventure trips and works as an instructor with Outward Bound in the summers. She enjoys traveling, horseback riding, hiking, backpacking, hanging out with her yellow Labrador Retriever and just about anything to get her outside!

 Michelle Hessey grew up in Baltimore and attended St. Mary's College of Maryland where she learned to combine her dual interests of teaching and spending time outside. After she graduated from college, Ms. Hessey volunteered with AmeriCorps, lived and worked in Israel, and returned to the UNited States to earn her Masters of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle. This is Ms. Hessey's first year of teaching at Outdoor School. She has taught outdoor and environmental education in many different settings, and is excited to join the team of talented educators at Carroll County Outdoor School. In her free time, Ms Hessey loves hiking, paddling, reading and cooking.

 

 
 Mary Hoy  is from Carroll County. She is a graduate of Salisbury University. Ms. Hoy has been a teacher at the Outdoor School for eleven years.She enjoys teaching kids about the environment, planting gardens with kids, vacationing on the river, and learning.Ms. Hoy is available to help with school grounds projects such as butterfly nurseries, songbird gardens and rain gardens.

Matthew Lustig is originally from Maryland. He is a graduate  of Houghton  College with a Bachelor of Science degree and recently graduated from McDaniel College with a Master of Science degree.  This is Mr Lustig's sixth year of teaching at the Outdoor School. Prior to teaching within the school system, Mr Lustig worked in the field of Parks and Recreation.
 
 
 
 
Joe Stevens is originally from Silver Spring, Md, but has lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, Virginia Beach, Va, and is back to Maryland. He completed his undergraduate work at Wheeling Jesuit University, his teaching certificate at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and has completed graduate work at Hood College and McDaniel College.Mr. Stevens has worked at the Outdoor School for five years. Mr. Stevens has worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in North Carolina, spent a summer working in Yellowstone National Park and toured through 46 of the 50 states. He has two great kids, Josh, 9 and Leah, 6 and two old pups that still keep him hopping. He has too many hobbies to have time for and loves life working in the most fantastic place ever imaginable.

 Mandy Chappell   is from Carroll County, Maryland. She holds  Bachelor of Fine Arts and  Bachelor of Arts degrees from Frostburg State University. This is Ms. Chappell's first year at Outdoor School, but has been a volunteer at Bear Branch Nature Center for over 10 years. Ms. Chappell loves to travel and loves the outdoors. She enjoys photography and also works as a wedding photographer in the Baltimore area.
 
Favorite Quote: " If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea".
 
 
 Tom Vail is originally from Woodlawn in Baltimore County and moved to Carroll County at age 11, where he still resides.Mr. Vail graduated from Liberty High School in 1992 and Western Maryland College in 1996.Mr. Vail has worked at the Outdoor School for 12 years. Mr. Vail has taught  marching band at Liberty High School for the past 16 years. He enjoys music and plays guitar in two local bands.

 Marsha Compton is originally from Maryland and graduated from Carroll Community College. She has worked at the Outdoor School for two years. Ms. Compton enjoys reading and gardening. She has previously worked as an editor/proofreader, an office assistant and an instructional assistant. She states "The main thing I do  now is move my children from place to  place".

 Sue Emanuel, RN is originally from the Pittsburgh area, has lived in New Jersey and moved to Maryland in June of 2006.She graduated from Eastern College, St. Davids, Pa with a Bachelor's degree and received her RN degree from Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pa. Ms. Emanuel received her school nurse certification from Rowan University, Glassboro, New Jersey. This is Ms. Emanuel's second year at the Outdoor School. She worked at North Carroll Middle and Shiloh Middle Schools during the past two years.Prior nursing  experience includes hospital nursing, nursing home, medical station in casino in Atlantic City, NJ., school nursing in NJ and MD.Ms Emanuel enjoys reading, knitting, and spending time with her family (husband, five children and two grandchildren).

Pamela Haines, RN has been a resident of Carroll County her entire life.She lives in the Sykesville area with her husband and three sons.Ms.Haines is a graduate of South Carroll High School.She received her RN education at Maryland General Hospital School of Nursing, and her BSN from Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) This is Ms. Haines' second year at the Outdoor School. Prior nursing experience includes 30 years of hospital nursing in the areas of medical surgical, oncology, psychiatry, emergency room and nursing administration. Ms. Haines also works as an adjunct faculty member at Carroll Community College in the Allied Health Career Programs. She enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family.

Patsy Dahlberg, RN is originally from Ridgely, Md. She lives in Carroll County with her daughter and son. Ms. Dahlberg received her nursing education at Towson University. This is her second year at Outdoor School. Prior nursing experience includes 15 years as a surgical nurse at Carroll Hospital Center. Ms. Dahlberg loves Hashawha and loves the outdoors.
